In which city did you take your first class or private session with Bettina May? If not the city listed above, how far did you travel for the class?
What made you decide to take the class? Was it an easy decision, or something you had to step outside your comfort zone to make happen.
I took the class three years ago as a 30th birthday gift to myself. I've always been the one behind the camera, never wanting to be in the "spotlight". As part of my "30 During 30" bucket list included both taking a class "for me" and continuing my journey in self-love and acceptance. So when I saw a post for this class coming to Portland (truly don't remember how or where I learned about it), I just said "This is something I have to do!"
Did you have any previous experience with a vintage look, or was this a brand new experience for you?
I've always been an admire and lover of classic looks - from Vivien Leigh, Lucille Ball, Yvonne De Carlo.... Prior to the class I had just bought my first RED lipstick and was trying it out. But it wasn't until the class that I finally had that spark of how to incorporate these timeless looks into my everyday.
Did you go on to pursue more photoshoots, or take another class with Bettina?
I have not (YET) done another class or photoshoot with Bettina. I wanted to the last time she was in Portland but the scheduling just didn't work in my favor. I do plan on keeping my eye out the for the next time she comes to town! However, I did purchase her video Bombshell Basics (two copies actually) and have watched it a few times, as well as given it away as a gift/prize.
How have your new pin-up skills been put to use in other ways?
I have done a few burlesque workshops (with the Rose City School of Burlesque and during the first Body Love conference) as well as have posed in another round of pin-up photos with a different photographer. As well as my "everyday" makeup is the style and techniques that were taught in the class. I've also started feeling more comfortable in my skin and find myself striking a pose even when no one is taking my picture (you just never know when you'll be a photobomber).
How do you feel your life has changed since taking this class?
Aside from now feeling more comfortable in my own skin (something that Bettina's friendliness, professionalism and overall energy provided during the class), the class really was the spring board for me finding my path to self acceptance. I no longer feel I have to conform to a certain expectation or stereotype for someone of my body shape. I feel gorgeous in clothes and have finally found a way to express my personality and spirit outwardly in my everyday life.
What would you want to tell other people who want to try something new with their life but aren't confident enough to take the plunge?
Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and anyone and everyone should be allowed to feel glamorous - besides it's how YOU feel not what other's think that is important.
