In which city did you take your first class or private session with Bettina May?
I took Bettina’s class in New York City in early September 2013.
What made you decide to take the class?
I took a trip into New York City to visit Bettie Page Clothing (now called Tatyana Boutique). While I was shopping there and telling the sales associate about my recent obsession with retro style she suggested I take Bettina’s class and gave me her name. There was slight hesitation, as there is with anything I decide to try, but once I booked the class I couldn’t wait to take it.
Did you have any previous experience with a vintage look, or was this a brand new experience for you?
Any “experience“ I had with a vintage look had come from a few months prior of Google and YouTube searches on hair and makeup. To have Bettina actually show you roller set patterns and makeup techniques, with the opportunity to ask questions, was an invaluable experience for me.
Did you go on to pursue more photoshoots, or take another class with Bettina?
I booked my first full photo shoot 3 weeks after Bettina's class and another one after that. Those shoots led to creating a modeling portfolio on Model Mayhem and modeling at local photographer's workshops. I was Miss Vixen Pinup at United Ink Summer Vibe 2014, I came in 2nd at the Bettie Page Reveals All premiere [in NYC, for the Bettie Page Lookalike contest], and I also got a non-exclusive modeling contract with MSA models in NYC.
How do you feel your life has changed since taking this class?
One of my favorite quotes is “A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.” This is exactly what Bettina‘s class did for me. I had taken such an interest in pinup girl style in the months prior and didn’t know how to move past watching “How To” videos on the internet. Her class was so much more than what I expected and I still use what I learned in her class today.
What would you want to tell other people who want to try something new with their life but aren’t confident enough to take the plunge?
It has taken me a while to learn that my life is meant to be joyfully abundant. It should be filled with new experiences and I should take chances. Do it for yourself. Give yourself a gift of learning something you‘re interested in.
Anything else you want to add?
After taking that first step of taking Bettina‘s class I have made quite a few friends on the social media scene. You can find links to all of my social media on my website veronicawyles.com
