In which city did you take your first class with Bettina May?

Brooklyn, NY.

What made you decide to do the class?

I was in desperate need of an album cover photo for a song I wrote and recorded as a Valentine’s Day gift for my then husband all the way back in 2011, when I spotted a poster of Bettina’s class in the window of my favorite vintage clothing store… Needless to say, I ran home to sign up!

Did you have any previous experience with a vintage look, or was this a brand new experience for you?

I went through a loooooong 60s phase until crossing paths with Bettina, and even though I had toyed with some of the concepts explored in her class, it would have taken me ages to gather up the knowledge and learn the secrets she so generously, expertly and effectively shared.

Did you go on to pursue more photoshoots, or take another class with Bettina?

Both! To this day, I am still rather camera shy, but feel like I’ve come light years away thanks to her crystal clear pointers and superb direction. I also took Bettina’s Bombshell Hair class a few years after attending that first class to, ahem, brush up on her genius styling techniques, and have had the privilege of her help on a few other personal projects that have always warranted better than expected results.

How have your new pin-up skills been put to use in other ways?

I could have never anticipated how much I would put the acquired skills to use routinely and immediately, most often in my day to day life, as someone who thoroughly enjoys the ritualistic aspects of beautifying oneself and celebrating being a woman every chance given.

How do you feel your life has changed since this experience?

Few experiences, if any, are more life-changing and empowering than confidence, which I think is, across the board, the most valued prize that people take away from this class. It’s almost as though it took my whole life until that point to find out what the real me looked like… The more I embraced my newly claimed identity, the more I was able to feel like myself, act like myself, and stay true to myself in nearly every life situation since.

What would you want to tell other people who want to try something new with their life but aren‘t confident enough to take the plunge?

DO IT! Go for it! What’s the worst that can happen!? You can do it! Don’t take it nor yourself so seriously… Just give it and yourself a chance and see what happens. Heck… do it for your own curiosity’s sake!

Anything else you want to add?

I am beyond ecstatic to share with anyone that will listen that I finally followed my own advice, and just debuted my first ever burlesque act! It took YEARS to work up the confidence and make the time to actually seriously even entertain the prospect, and even though I really wasn’t sure I had it in me, and was positive I would faint from nerves as soon as I laid as much as a single toe on the stage, I have lived to report that never have I EVER before in my entire life felt better or nearly as happy doing anything else… It is a feeling I now beg everyone to PLEASE go out there and find for themselves, because I promise you, there isn’t anything like it. Keep an eye out for a certain Trudy Yours, world!
