In which city did you take your first class with Bettina May?
NYC at the Beauty Bar!
What made you decide to take the class? Was it an easy decision, or something you had to step outside your comfort zone to make happen?
It was undoubtedly an easy decision. I’ve never been afraid of doing things alone so I registered and took the class solo.
Did you have any previous experience with a vintage look, or was this a brand new experience for you?
It’s something that always peaked my interest, at the time I was dressing in what I thought was vintage style. Once I took the class my curiosity intensified and I started wearing real vintage clothing. Bettina’s class is ridiculously informative, she’s made hot rollers and red lipstick into a legitimate super power.
Did you go on to pursue more photoshoots, or take another class with Bettina?
Yessiree! In the past I was signed with a modeling agency. It was definitely the wrong place, wrong time.. going to castings always felt dehumanizing and unnecessarily competitive. I had never thought to model without an agency, Bettina’s class was the stepping stone to my freelance modeling endeavors. It can *definitely* be done. And you better charge for it, too! I’ve appeared in Eidé, Wired, and Dark Beauty magazine.
How do you feel your life has changed since taking this class?
The class put me en route to discovering a prosperous NYC arts scene. I’ve met so many people who’ve taken an unorthodox hobby and turned it into a business, which is profoundly inspiring. Following the class, I developed a certain risk taking confidence. I went so far as to drop out of nursing school and move to New York to pursue my vintage clothing business, Aurora Morticia, and completely change my life path from health professions to design. I’d love to eventually design speakeasies, tree houses, and installations for special events. I also have a few side schemes - I’m amidst become a professional mermaid and starting a blog on urban exploration. It’s pretty funny to think I started out at a white collar nursing school!
What would you want to tell other people who want to try something new with their life but aren‘t confident enough to take the plunge?
I think humans are a lot more supportive than everyone likes to think. When you pursue a dream that is the very essence of you, I think people can really see that. And they want to support you. Because it gives them the reassurance that their dreams aren’t all that bizarre or unachievable.
Anything else you want to add?
Yeah, I have a few social media platforms that I can be reached on!
