In which city did you take your first class with Bettina May?
In the beautiful city of Victoria BC, Canada in February 2007.
What made you decide to take the class? Was it an easy decision, or something you had to step outside your comfort zone to make happen?
My friend and I booked our first Pin Up class with Bettina as a “look forward to experience“ between graduating massage school and our board exams. It was a full on YES decision, and it was really fun to learn how to do vintage hair and make up. The posing and photoshoot was new for me and a bit of a stretch but Bettina made me feel so comfortable. She made it really accessible to just jump in and try it. Plus, we were all feeling so good with our hair and make up done and our outfits on that it was a breeze.
Did you have any previous experience with a vintage look, or was this a brand new experience for you?
I’ve always enjoyed a low maintenance beauty regime on a daily basis, but I love to dress up, be glamourous or extravagant for fun nights out on the town. I had been loving vintage and pin up style around that time and taking a class with Bettina was so fun to learn how to style my hair and make up so I could rock that look for something fun.
Did you go on to pursue more photoshoots, or take another class with Bettina?
I booked another photoshoot with Bettina just before she moved away to New York City to become a class act pin up model and burlesque star! She‘s our beloved home town sweetheart.
How do you feel your life has changed since taking this class?
The class gave me a huge dose of confidence, inspiration and nurtured my love for dress up and personal expression. Bettina offered practical hair setting, make up and posing techniques that have stuck with me over the years. The warm, fun way she taught made me feel comfortable to take the leap and pose for the camera.
What would you want to tell other people who want to try something new with their life but aren‘t confident enough to take the plunge?
Life is meant to be lived. So if you think something like this would be fun but your feeling nervous because it‘s new, then that is the exact type of fear you should lean into and run through. The other side is full of fun and good times, do it! You’ll be SO glad you did.
