In which city did you take your first class or private session with Bettina May?
I took my first class, Bombshell Hair, with Bettina May at the New York School of Burlesque in April 2014.
What made you decide to do the class or photoshoot? Was it an easy decision, or something you had to step outside your comfort zone to make happen.
I enrolled in Bettina's Bombshell Hair class in order to expand my skill set in creating vintage inspired coiffures. Everyone has a personal approach to beauty in the way that they transform themselves, so attending Bettina's class gave me the chance to learn varied techniques and shortcuts that I had not previously known. Bettina is an amazing teacher. She absolutely believes in the abilities of each and every one of her students. Her encouragement and dedication to finding the pin-up inside of every woman sets even the most uneasy or anxious person attending her class at ease.
Did you have any previous experience with a vintage look, or was this a brand new experience for you?
Prior to attending the Bombshell Hair class, I had some experience with creating vintage hairstyles. I had gained most of my knowledge from studying old cosmetology books from the 1930s-1940s. Some of the concepts in these books seemed incredibly difficult to me. Many of the techniques shown have become obsolete. The Bombshell Hair class gave me the information I needed to better understand the concepts and techniques that I had difficulty with. It has definitely increased my proficiency in fashioning my hair. What used to take me half a day before attending Bettina's class now only takes an hour at most. I've also gained more flexibility and variety, as well as complexity, in the hairstyles that I can now create.
Did you go on to pursue more photoshoots, or take another class with Bettina?
I took my second class, Pin-up Class, in Brooklyn, in March 2016.
How have your new pin-up skills been put to use in other ways?
It is my biggest aspiration and dream to become a WWII reenactor or WWII living historian. I am able to take the skills learned in Bettina's class and apply them directly to perfecting my impression and achieving my goal.
How do you feel your life has changed since this experience?
I am a naturally shy person who would blush and giggle nervously at the mention of getting in front of a camera to strike a pose. Bettina's Pin-Up Class really helped me overcome some of my self-consciousness. I was able to just let go and have fun without judgement or negativity. Now, in situations where I feel unsure or am afraid of being judged by others, I recall what the feeling of letting go felt like and that gives me the extra confidence I need to proceed. I have recently become unemployed and am looking forward to being able to use this same method of recollection and confidence to land a new position with a prospective employer.
What would you want to tell other people who want to try something new with their life but aren‘t confident enough to take the plunge?
Life is short and it goes by in the blink of an eye. Don't let fear or hesitation stand in the way of living the life that you want to live. Eventually, the day will come when you will regret the things that you did not allow yourself to do. When I am faced with an extremely difficult situation and am on the brink of giving up, I remember these words by Eleanor Roosevelt, “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
